The Pobjoy Mint has worked titanium commercially since the 1970s, longer than virtually any other private mint, developing proprietary striking techniques required to handle a metal that work-hardens rapidly and resists conventional die pressure. The "Daylight Zone" denomination belongs to a Pobjoy series subdividing the ocean water column into depth-defined strata — an unusual thematic framework for a coin program and one that required multiple issues to complete.
Titanium's interference coloring, produced by anodizing the surface oxide layer, shifts hue depending on voltage applied — not paint or enamel.
