The D-Day 75th anniversary in 2019 prompted a wave of British commemorative issues, and the Royal Mint's piedfort format — double the standard flan thickness — has been used since the 1980s as a premium collector vehicle with no circulation intention whatsoever. Piedforts originated as mint presentation pieces in medieval France, struck to demonstrate die quality to prospective clients rather than for monetary use.
