| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the George IV State Diadem and a pearl necklace, as modelled by Raphael David Maklouf. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left periphery, with GIBRALTAR and the date 1992 continuing around the right side, all within a beaded border. |

Gibraltar's 1992 Columbus commemorative arrived in a crowded field — Spain, the United States, the Bahamas, and dozens of other nations all struck issues for the 500th anniversary of the first voyage. Gibraltar's claim to the subject is tenuous at best; Columbus almost certainly passed through the Strait on his return in 1493, which is roughly the extent of the connection. The Royal Mint struck the piece under contract, as Gibraltar lacked its own production facility.
