| Obverse description | Fifth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark, facing right, wearing the George IV State Diadem adorned with pearls and floral motifs, with a drop earring visible. The bare-shouldered, draped bust is rendered in high relief with fine detail characteristic of proof striking. The circumferential legend reads ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS · 2021, with the engraver's initials J.C. incuse below the truncation. The mirror-polished field provides strong contrast against the frosted devices. |

Issued to mark the 156th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's 1865 publication, this coin belongs to a Royal Mint commemorative series launched in 2021. Carroll — born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson — was a mathematics lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford, and first told the story during a boating trip on the Thames in July 1862 to entertain the three daughters of the college dean, one of whom was the real Alice Liddell. The tale wasn't committed to print for another three years.
The .9999 fineness is notably purer than the .925 sterling used in most Royal Mint silver proofs of the preceding decades.
