Alderney sits five miles off the Normandy coast and was the only part of the British Isles to suffer full German military occupation during World War II — a fact that gives any commemorative issued under its authority a particular historical charge. The island's civilian population was evacuated in June 1940, and German forces fortified it heavily as part of the Atlantic Wall. It was not liberated until May 1945, days after the German surrender.
The Channel Islands have issued commemoratives under Crown Dependency authority since the 1970s, with Alderney receiving its own distinct issuing rights in 1989.
