| Reverse description | Finely detailed depiction of the Archangel Michael, armour-clad and winged, triumphant over a vanquished dragon, inspired by the classic Angel coinage tradition. The archangel stands in dynamic contrapposto, raising a sword in his right hand and holding a long lance with which he subdues the writhing serpentine dragon beneath his feet. A radiant nimbus surrounds his head, and his large feathered wings extend across the field. The Latin legend PER CRUCEM TUAM · SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR (By Thy Cross, save us, O Christ our Redeemer) runs along the inner border, flanked by a beaded inner circle, with the engraver's initial S visible in the lower right field. The reverse was engraved by Stephen Dinsdale. |
