Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators rented a cellar beneath the House of Lords and packed it with 36 barrels of gunpowder — enough, by some estimates, to have leveled the entire Palace of Westminster. The plot was betrayed by an anonymous letter, and Fawkes was arrested in the early hours of November 5, 1605. Parliament almost immediately passed the Observance of 5th November Act, making annual bonfires a legal requirement for English subjects — a statute not formally repealed until 1859.
Guernsey's connection to the tradition runs through its Protestant identity and historical ties to the Crown, though the island's observance has always carried its own character.
