The Gold State Coach depicted on this piece has carried every British monarch to their coronation since George IV in 1821, though it is notoriously uncomfortable — reportedly described by Queen Elizabeth II as "horrible" and by Prince Philip as "not very comfortable." Built between 1760 and 1762 at a cost of £7,562, it weighs four tons and requires eight horses to move at walking pace. The British Antarctic Territory, a UK Overseas Territory with no permanent civilian population, issues coins primarily for the collector market through licensing arrangements with the Royal Mint.
