Additional information

Ada Lovelace's inclusion in the Royal Mint's commemorative program rests on her work with Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine in the 1840s, specifically her translation of Luigi Menabrea's 1842 paper — to which she appended notes longer than the original text. Those notes contained what is now recognized as the first published algorithm intended for machine execution. She died in 1852 at 36, largely forgotten until her rediscovery by computing historians in the 20th century.

The piedfort format doubles the standard flan thickness, a technique borrowed from medieval proof strikings used to test die quality. The gold-plated outer ring on this silver example is applied post-strike.
