| Additional information |
Gebrüder Meer was one of the major textile manufacturing firms in the lower Rhine region, and like many large industrial employers in Wilhelmine Germany, it issued its own token coinage to manage wages and company-store transactions within its workforce. These Werksgeld pieces circulated exclusively within the factory's closed economic system — redeemable at the company canteen or commissary, and worthless outside the gates.
Zinc was the practical choice for low-denomination industrial tokens; cheap, easy to strike, and sufficiently distinct from official coinage to satisfy legal requirements.
