Additional information

A. Riebecksche Montanwerke was a major Halle-based mining and industrial conglomerate whose operations centered on brown coal extraction in the Geiseltal region. During WWI, the catastrophic shortage of copper and nickel — metals diverted entirely to the war effort — forced hundreds of German municipalities and private firms to issue their own emergency coinage, known as Kriegsnotgeld. Riebecksche was among the industrial issuers authorized to produce iron pieces for use within their own wage and canteen economy.

Iron struck poorly compared to the brass and zinc alloys used by other notgeld issuers, and corrosion has claimed a substantial share of surviving examples.
