Additional information

Elektricitätswerk Südwest AG was one of several private regional power companies operating in greater Berlin before municipal consolidation swept most of them into the Berliner Städtische Elektrizitätswerke (BEWAG) network during the 1920s. This zinc notgeld token was issued during the post-WWI material shortages, when small-denomination coinage had effectively vanished from circulation and utilities, transit companies, and industrial firms across Germany routinely issued their own substitute pieces to manage petty transactions with staff or customers.

Zinc was the default emergency metal of the period — cheap, available, and easy to stamp. The Wilmersdorf district reference anchors this piece to the company's southwestern Berlin service territory before the borough's absorption into Greater Berlin in 1920.
