The Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse — the general local health insurance fund — was an unlikely currency issuer, but the Notgeld emergency of 1921 pulled in institutions far outside the banking sector. Weimar's AOK issued this fractional note to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued German commerce during the inflationary spiral following World War I. Municipal authorities, private firms, even sports clubs printed their own Notgeld; a health insurer doing so was unremarkable by that point.
At 2 Pfennig, this is among the lowest denominations produced in the entire Notgeld period.
