Additional information

Aalen issued this notgeld piece in 1920 as municipal small change during the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's defeat in the First World War. Hoarding of metal coinage, wartime requisitioning, and the general disruption to Reichsbank distribution left hundreds of small German towns scrambling to produce their own emergency currency. Iron was the practical choice — cheap, available, and already familiar from wartime Reich issues.

The Funck and Menzel catalog references place this among the more straightforwardly documented Württemberg municipal issues, with no recorded die varieties of note.
