Uruguay introduced polymer coinage in 2021 partly to reduce per-unit production costs and extend circulation life — plastic blanks outlast cupro-nickel by a significant margin in high-turnover denominations. The 2 Pesos had already seen multiple compositional changes across its long history before this shift.

The Mercosur branding ties this issue to the 30th anniversary of the trade bloc's founding treaty, signed in Asunción in 1991.
