Issued by Fidel Castro's guerrilla organization during the final year of the insurgency against Batista, this note was part of a series of revolutionary scrip used to raise funds and pay fighters operating in the Sierra Maestra. The 26th of July Movement had no central bank and no printing infrastructure — these notes were produced under genuinely improvised conditions, and the quality reflects that.
Whether they functioned as true currency in any transactional sense remains debated. Some circulated within liberated zones; others were sold to sympathizers as revolutionary bonds. The underprint is notably rudimentary for a security feature, doing little practical work against counterfeiting in a zone where counterfeiting was not the primary threat.
