Colombia's 2 Peso coin of this period was issued during one of the country's most economically turbulent decades, when inflation consistently eroded purchasing power and the government repeatedly restructured its circulating coinage to keep pace. By the mid-1980s, the 2 Peso denomination had become nearly worthless in practical terms — a fate shared by most low-denomination Colombian coinage before the 1993 monetary reform eliminated the peso and replaced it with a redenominated currency at a 1000:1 ratio.
