Banco Provincial de San Juan was one of several Argentine provincial banks issuing their own currency during the 1880s, a period when Buenos Aires had not yet consolidated monetary authority across the provinces. The national banking law of 1887 actually encouraged this proliferation briefly before the whole edifice collapsed — the Baring Crisis of 1890 and the subsequent monetary reforms effectively ended provincial note issuance, making this series short-lived almost by design.
ABNC produced the plates in New York, as they did for a significant portion of Argentine provincial paper from this decade. San Juan's geographic isolation — a small Andean province far from the financial centers of the littoral — meant these notes rarely traveled and circulated hard within a narrow region.
