San Clemente is a small Castilian municipality in Cuenca province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War years, its ayuntamiento issued fractional paper scrip to compensate for the near-total disappearance of small coin from circulation. The Republican government's 1936–1937 emergency decrees technically authorized provincial and municipal emissions, but local execution was improvised — card stock, a rubber stamp, and whatever printing resources were at hand.
The Gari catalog suffix "-D" typically indicates a distinct die or stamp variant within the series, suggesting at least three other recognized types exist for this denomination from San Clemente alone.
