Puertollano, a coal-mining town in Ciudad Real province, issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War — one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities that produced local scrip when the Republic's small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation after 1936. Hoarding and metal requisitioning stripped the economy of coins almost immediately, forcing town councils to fill the gap themselves.
The Consejo Municipal issues from Puertollano are among the more obscure Castilian Civil War locals, and documented survivors are relatively few. The Gari Monerris catalogue remains the primary reference for these provincial emissions.
