Muro de Alcoy is a small municipality in the Valencian Community, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency paper money in 1937 when the Republican government's coin supply collapsed almost entirely. The copper and silver had vanished — hoarded, melted, or simply gone — and local councils filled the vacuum with cardboard and paper chits backed by nothing more than municipal authority and necessity.

The Gari Mon catalog remains the primary reference for these Spanish Civil War local issues, and the 985-E suffix indicates a specific variety within the Muro de Alcoy series.
