Menjíbar is a small agricultural town in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its local supply council — the Consejo Municipal de Abastecimientos — issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage vanished almost entirely from circulation after 1936. These hyper-local issues were produced under severe material constraints, which is why thick paper or card stock substituted for proper banknote stock. The Gari Montanyes catalog (Gari Mon#910-C) is the authoritative reference for these Jaén-area municipal emissions, classifying them by issuer and denomination rather than by any centralized issuing authority.
Survival rates for Menjíbar issues are low — the town's small population meant limited print runs, and post-war Francoist authorities made little effort to preserve Republican municipal scrip.
