Llanes is a small coastal municipality in Asturias, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it began printing its own emergency paper money in 1936 after the Civil War's outbreak shattered the national coin supply. The Republican government's inability to maintain fractional coinage circulation forced local ayuntamientos to fill the gap themselves — with whatever printing resources were at hand, which in Llanes meant rudimentary local production.
These municipal emissions were officially tolerated but never formally sanctioned by Madrid, and most were withdrawn and demonetized within two years. Notes from small Asturian municipalities were produced in tiny quantities and saw intensive local use, which is why survivors in any condition above heavily worn are uncommon.
