Fayón is a small municipality in Zaragoza province that found itself in a particularly precarious position during the Civil War — the Ebro front ran directly through the region, and the Battle of the Ebro in 1938, the war's longest and bloodiest engagement, was fought in the immediate vicinity. Local emergency currency of this kind was a practical necessity when normal monetary supply collapsed entirely under wartime conditions.
Municipal issues from villages this small are among the most difficult Spanish Civil War notgeld to locate today. Low print runs, paper quality never intended for longevity, and the chaos of the Republican collapse in late 1938 all worked against survival.
