El Vendrell is a small town in the Baix Penedès comarca of Catalonia, and this note belongs to the massive proliferation of municipal emergency currency — moneda de necessitat — that flooded Republican-held Spain after the Civil War disrupted normal coin supply in 1936. With silver and copper hoarded or melted, hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own fractional paper, often at local print shops with no banking infrastructure behind them whatsoever.
Arts Gràfiques Barnadas was a local El Vendrell printer pressed into monetary service. The sole security feature is a municipal stamp — the kind of anti-counterfeiting measure that would deter almost no one, but sufficed in a town where everyone knew everyone.
