Cuevas del Almanzora is a small mining town in Almería province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency paper money when the Republican zone faced a catastrophic shortage of small-denomination coinage. The central Republican government had begun requisitioning silver and copper for the war effort, and by 1937 fractional currency had all but vanished from daily commerce in much of Andalusia.
These municipal issues — collectively catalogued under the "Guerra Civil" local emergency series — were theoretically backed by the issuing council's credit, which in most cases meant very little. Redemption after the Nationalist victory was never honored.
