Catral is a small agricultural municipality in the Vega Baja del Segura, and like dozens of comparable towns in Republican-held Spain, its local council began issuing emergency paper money in 1936–37 when the withdrawal of metallic coin from circulation created a practical crisis for daily commerce. These locally-issued notes — known collectively as papel moneda local or moneda de emergencia — were never legal tender beyond the issuing municipality and often became worthless within months as the war shifted.
The printer, Tipografía Alonso of Almoradí, produced emergency issues for several neighboring councils in the comarca during the same period, which occasionally creates attribution confusion between similar series. Designer credit to A. Marco is unusually specific for issues of this type.
