One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes printed by Catalan municipalities during the early months of the Civil War, when the Republic's central banking system had effectively ceased to function at the local level and copper coinage had been hoarded out of circulation almost overnight. Bigues — a small agricultural township north of Barcelona — was among the many Catalan ajuntaments that contracted Gràfiques Unificades in Granollers to produce these emergency pieces, which is why notes from half a dozen different municipalities share recognizable typographic DNA.
Turró catalogued this issue as #436. The Granollers printer handled a substantial volume of this work through 1937.
