Belalcázar is a small municipality in the northern tip of Córdoba province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it was forced to issue its own fractional emergency currency during the Civil War when Republican-zone coinage virtually disappeared from circulation after 1936. These municipal emergency emissions — collectively documented under the Gari Moneders catalog — were purely local instruments, valid only within the issuing community and backed by nothing more than the town's word.

The Gari Mon#254-E suffix indicates this is classified as an essay or specimen variant, not a confirmed circulating issue. That distinction matters: many small Andalusian municipalities prepared emergency currency that was never formally distributed.
