Begíjar is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns in the summer and autumn of 1936, its municipal council issued emergency fractional currency after the outbreak of the Civil War severed reliable access to Republican coinage and small-denomination notes. These local emissions — collectively known as "moneda de necesidad" — were produced under no central authority, often on whatever paper, card, or printing equipment the town hall had available.

Provincial Jaén remained under Republican control throughout the war, but the disruption to normal monetary supply was immediate and severe. What survives from Begíjar is invariably crude in execution — a direct consequence of purely local production.
