Barbastro, a small Aragonese town south of the Pyrenees, became an unlikely issuer of emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War after the banking system collapsed and the Republican zone faced an acute shortage of coin. The Consejos Comarcal y Local de Economía — a joint local-regional economic council — stepped in to fill the gap, issuing notes through the Centre d'Administració Municipal in Barcelona, which printed emergency currency for numerous Republican localities during this period.
The official stamp serves as the primary authentication device, a common and somewhat vulnerable approach that left these issues open to crude forgery. Gari Mon#232-E places this within a well-documented but highly localized series.
