During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican-held Ayuntamiento of Alhama de Murcia — a small market town in the Segura highlands — issued emergency fractional currency to address the almost total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation. Copper and silver had been hoarded, melted, or requisitioned by both sides within months of the July 1936 uprising, leaving municipalities across the Levante and Murcia regions scrambling to print their own substitutes.

These local issues, collectively catalogued under Guerra Civil emergency coinage studies, were produced under no central oversight and vary wildly in paper quality and printing precision from town to town. The Gari Montaner reference remains the authoritative catalogue for the Murcia region specifically.
