Albesa is a small municipality in the Lleida province of Catalonia. Like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency — these local notes, collectively known as "moneda local" or "paper moneda," emerged after the Republic's coinage effectively vanished from circulation in 1936, hoarded or melted almost overnight. Turró catalogues thousands of these issues; most were printed on whatever card stock was locally available and authenticated with nothing more than an official municipal stamp, which is exactly the case here.
Albesa's output was tiny. Village-scale issues rarely survived even their own redemption periods intact.
