Obverse description First definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Mary Gillick, depicting the young Queen as a laureate and draped bust facing right. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and laurel wreath. The encircling legend reads '+ ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA·F:D:' in Latin, distributed around the periphery of the field.

Reverse description Central large numeral '2' occupies the field, surmounted by a royal crown. The denomination is flanked on either side by sprays of oak leaves and acorns forming a wreath. The date '2002' is divided across the upper field, with '20' to the left and '02' to the right of the crown, in keeping with the traditional Maundy coinage reverse design.
