Obverse description The Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India, depicted in high relief at the centre of the field, showing three lions atop an abacus with a central Dharma Chakra (wheel). The country name legend is divided on either side of the emblem, reading in Devanagari script to the left and in Latin script to the right. The scalloped border is defined by a continuous series of milled notches.
