The "Fusión de Dos Culturas" series was authorized by Banco de México to mark the quincentenary of the fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521 — the event that effectively ended Mexica imperial rule and began three centuries of Spanish colonial administration. Mexico issued several denominations across the series, with the 2-onza silver piece occupying the middle tier of the program.
The KM# 940 attribution places this squarely within Banco de México's modern commemorative bullion program, which has produced some of the most technically ambitious Mexican silver issues of the past two decades.
