Obverse description King John I enthroned in full regalia within a multi-lobed inner circle, holding a sceptre in his right hand and an orb in his left, flanked by elaborate architectural elements including towers and turrets rendered in the Gothic style. The monarch wears a crown and robes depicted with considerable detail characteristic of late medieval hammered coinage. A ship or vessel motif appears at the base of the throne. The surrounding field is enclosed by a beaded inner border, with the Latin legend in uncial characters running continuously around the outer margin.
