Additional information

Struck under the Bank of Israel's ongoing commemorative program, this 1998 issue belongs to a series celebrating motifs drawn from archaeological finds at ancient Israelite sites — the pomegranate in particular gained sharp numismatic attention in the early 1990s when a small ivory pomegranate, believed to be from Solomon's Temple, sold at auction and was later acquired by the Israel Museum, only for its authenticity to come under serious dispute in 2004.
