Israel's Independence Day coins are issued annually under a rotating theme, and the 2013 selection of Yad Vashem — the Holocaust remembrance authority established by Knesset law in 1953 — came sixty years after the institution's founding. Yad Vashem holds the world's largest repository of Holocaust documentation, and its inclusion in the Independence Day series reflects a deliberate national policy of linking statehood directly to the memory of the genocide that preceded it.
The KM#509 designation places this within a long run of annual issues, most struck in modest quantities for collector distribution rather than circulation.
