Israel's 43rd Independence Day series focused on aliya — the mass immigration of Jews to Israel — at a moment when the theme was anything but ceremonial. Between 1990 and 1991, roughly 380,000 Soviet Jews arrived in Israel following the collapse of the USSR, the largest single wave of immigration the country had absorbed in decades. The coin was struck against that immediate backdrop, not as retrospective commemoration but as a near-contemporary document of a demographic event still unfolding at the time of minting.
