Struck to mark the twentieth anniversary of Israeli control over the entirety of Jerusalem following the Six-Day War of June 1967, this issue was politically charged from the moment of its authorization. Israel's claim to a unified Jerusalem has never received broad international recognition — most foreign governments, and the United Nations, still treat the city's eastern half as occupied territory — making commemoratives of this type as much political statement as numismatic product.
