Reverse description The reverse reproduces, in fine relief, Rembrandt van Rijn's celebrated 1634 oil painting 'The Binding of Isaac' (Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg). The composition depicts the patriarch Abraham kneeling over the bound figure of Isaac, a knife raised in his hand, while an angel descends dramatically from billowing clouds at upper left to restrain his arm. The scene fills the entire field of the coin with fluid, engraved line-work that faithfully captures the baroque dynamism and chiaroscuro of the original painting. The smooth, proof-finished field provides a striking contrast to the finely detailed figural group.
