| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash-style coin with a central square hole. The obverse bears four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion around the central perforation, reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang), 通 (Tong), 平 (Pyong), 寶 (Bo), together forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), the standard inscription of the Joseon dynasty's Sangpyeong Department currency. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) within a plain, unadorned field, with no rim decoration beyond a simple raised border. |
