| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform pattern around a central square hole, reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang), 寶 (Bo), 平 (Pyong), 通 (Tong). The upper and lower characters read 常平 (Sangpyong), referring to the Sangpyongcheong, the Bureau of Ever-Normal Treasury of the Joseon Dynasty. The right and left characters read 通寶 (Tongbo), the standard term for currency. The characters are cast in relief within a plain field, in the classical Chinese numismatic tradition. |
