Obverse description Central square hole flanked by the four-character legend 常平通寶 (Changpyong Tongbo), reading top, bottom, right, left in the traditional arrangement: 常 (Sang) at top, 平 (Pyong) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bo) at left. The inscription references the Sangpyeong-cheong (Office of Stabilization), the government bureau responsible for issuing this currency. All characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) within the plain, flat field of the cast flan. The reverse side of the central perforation is framed by a square raised rim, with a circular outer rim bounding the coin.
