Obverse description Cast brass cash-type coin with a central square perforation, typical of Joseon dynasty monetary issues. The four-character legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo) is arranged in the four cardinal positions around the central hole, reading top-bottom-right-left in the traditional Chinese fashion. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) with raised strokes against a flat field. The obverse is heavily patinated with green and brown encrustations consistent with age, and the coin exhibits characteristic casting irregularities along the inner rim of the square hole.
