| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash coin with a central square hole surrounded by a raised square rim. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around the central aperture: 常 (Sang) at top, 平 (Pyong) at bottom, 通 (Tong) at right, and 寶 (Bo) at left, together reading 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), identifying this as currency of the Sangpyeongcheong, the Office of Ever-Normal Currency of the Korean Joseon Dynasty. The characters are rendered in bold, well-formed strokes within a plain outer border. |
