| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters arranged in a cruciform pattern around a central square hole, reading 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo) in the traditional top-bottom-right-left sequence. The characters 常 (top) and 平 (bottom) identify the Sangpyeong-cheong, the Joseon Dynasty's Agency for Price Stabilization, while 通 (right) and 寶 (left) together form the term for currency or circulating treasure. The inscription is rendered in regular script (kaishu) with clean, bold strokes typical of cast Korean cash coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. The field surrounding the central perforation is plain, with no additional decorative elements. |
