Obverse description Central square hole flanked on all four sides by Chinese characters in regular script (楷書). Reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang) at top, 通 (Tong) at right, 寶 (Bo) at bottom, and 平 (Pyong) at left, forming the two-character inscriptions 常平 (Sangpyong, referring to the Sangpyong Office, the administrative body overseeing coin issuance) and 通寶 (Tongbo, meaning 'circulating treasure' or currency). The characters are cast in relief within the plain round field, following the traditional East Asian cash coin format.
