| Obverse description | Central square hole surrounded by four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain inner ring. Reading clockwise from the top, the legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), identifying this as currency of the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) treasury system of the Joseon Dynasty. The characters 常 (top) and 平 (bottom) are read vertically, while 通 (right) and 寶 (left) are read horizontally, following the standard arrangement of Korean cash-type coinage. The field is plain with no additional decorative elements. |
